Damage tolerance design in advanced metallic airframes must take into consideration the performance of welded aluminum structures under cyclic loads. Herein, the problem in welded components is of major interest. Fatigue crack growth analysis of welded components is very complex mainly due to: i) the microstructural variation in the weld region ii) the presence of residual stresses induced in the material during the welding process. The present research in focused in developing a crack growth analysis code for assessing fatigue crack growth rate in welded aluminum alloys. The code will take into account parameters that influence fatigue crack propagation in the welded region. Experiments will be performed to assess the behavior of a crack inside the welded region under cyclic loads. The model will be validated with the obtained experimental results.
