Sarcoptic mange is one of the most common skin diseases of small ruminants (goats, sheep) in Greece. Regarding sheep, there have beein published studies, describing the clinical manifestations and pathology of the disease, and its negative effect on the reproductive activity, development and performance of the animals. However, there are limited data considering sarcoptic mange in goats.

The aim of this thesis is the study pf pathology of sarcoptic mange, especially regarding the tissue pathogenesis and the immune response of goat skin to the causative agent of sarcoptic mange (mite Sarcoptes scabiei). It is known that sarcoptic mange in goats has a defferent clinical picture from sheep (especially in regards to the distribution of skin lesions). The research project includes the study of sarcoptic mange in naturally and experimentally infected goats. Histopathological and immunohistochemical techniques will be used for the study of immune response of goat skin to Sarcoptes scabiei. The results are expected to be of particular scientific significance not only for goat helath and husbandry, since the disease affects many mammalian species (domestic and wildlife), including humans.
