The proposed research aims at analyzing one of the three components that determine the evolution of the Greek population (fertility).
In the first part, based on existing literature and through analysis of the available data from 1950 to today. We will examine the evolution of total fertility and its components (in and out of wedlock fertility, by birth order). By placing more emphasis on emergent phenomena of the past 30 years (Postponement, replacement, childlessness).
The second part will examine the spatial variations in fertility both within Greece (at "nomos" level) and at the international level by making a comparative analysis between Greece and the Balkan countries.
Final, taking into account the results of the above analysis and the international and national experience, we will identify the key determinants of low fertility. Then we will attempted to make forecasts, through different scenarios, of the evolution of fertility in our country for a short period (2012-2030) and its impact on population structure and dynamics  (Demographic ageing). Finally, we will attempt to define the necessary policy measures to enhance fertility in harmony with the Greek social "particularities" and the on going economic situation.
